This Winter season has been a slow show season for me, compared to last years, so when I finally decided to venture off to a gig I, of course, picked a strange one. Topping the bill was hip-hopper turned soulman, Everlast, and his supporting acts were none other than pop-punk stalwarts, New Found Glory and Four Year Strong. Eventful? You bet, with so many different kinds of people swishing and swaying in the venue, it was quite the clusterfuck of niches and stereotypes. All things considered though, the crowd just about cleared out as soon as Everlast took the stage, but that can easily be blamed on the prior bands demand for high energy and Everlasts, well, stoner fanbase.
Tucked away behind the House of Guitars merch booth, wafting in the passing smells of weed and alcohol by the entrance ways, I managed to get lucky enough to snap a photo with the Dan O’Connor and Alan Day of Four Year Strong, and let me tell you, never have I ever met band members, so interested in their fans. We all have our bad days, sure, but these guys were just the most approachable beings in the whole place. As New Found Glory tore through a blistering set, these two sat down, got their signing hands ready, and stayed until every single person got a picture and an autograph. A truly rare sight, if I say so myself.
Unfortunately, all of the members of FYS weren’t present, due to their drummer having contracted a severe stomach bug, putting quite the stopper on the band playing as a quartet, but that didn’t stop Dan and Alan from running through a set of acoustic renditions of some of their hits, mixed in with a few fan favorites. The mood was ethereal, as the crowd shouted back just about every word, you could tell our dearly beloved FYS representatives for the evening were grateful for the audiences understanding.
Looking back, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. For me, THIS was a Four Year Strong show, and they truly owned the night. A huge kudos goes out to all the bands for all the work at putting on one of the best shows. What a beautiful way for me to reintroduce myself into the show going culture, right?
